Secrets of a Stager: Turning an Empty Space into a Family Room

Home stagers and interior designers are more alike than they are different. Like a good designer, a staging pro will consider balance, composition, color, flow, texture and contrast and livability when approaching a project.

This room is a new addition built to allow flow from the kitchen and breakfast nook into the family room. The goal was to turn the empty space into a welcoming family room in before listing the renovated home for sale.

Secret #1
Sectionals are not required. There’s a lot to be said for being able to move easily through a room that’s not blocked by a giant couch. A sleek sofa and three chairs provide just as much seating without the visual weight.

Secret #2
Bring in bold color and texture. Here, vertical shiplap was added to the fireplace wall and painted a deep gray black.

Secret #3
Add contrast. The crisp contrast between the white linen sofa and gray chairs plays perfectly off the black wall.

Secret #4
Include sculptural elements. The harmonious connection between the wood framing of the chairs, the center table with its oversized wooden bowl, the architectural lamp and hourglass side table brings fluidity to the space.

Secret #5
Warm up the space with natural elements and earthy neutrals. The organic tones and textures in the bird of paradise, woven basket, throw pillows, and cow hide rug layered atop jute create an inviting finish. The result is cozy and modern—a space that is bold, yet approachable.
