White Wine & Other Surprising Stain Removal Secrets
According to a study commissioned by Persil, summer is the messiest of all seasons. That’s science, folks. Sunscreen and snow cone trucks, dinner on the barbie and movies on the lawn: Summer’s rife with stain opportunities.
Everybody knows the miracle of vinegar and baking soda, but what about dryer sheets, shaving cream and white wine? Read on for some lesser known—but greatly effective—tools to add to your stain removal arsenal.
PRO TIPS
When using liquid soap on a stain, rub from the outside of the stain inward in order to minimize the spread.
If your stain is on white fabric (and only white!) you can dab lemon juice on the stain to act as a bleaching agent.
BBQ Sauce
Flush back of stain with cold water, dab with liquid dishwashing soap and soak several hours before washing.
Deodorant
Gently blot away deodorant smear with a used dryer sheet or the protective foam used on dry cleaning hangers.
Foundation
Find the one can of shaving cream no one’s used up making slime. Gently work it into the stain with a washcloth.
Grass
Soak in white vinegar for an hour, then scrub gently using a toothbrush dipped into liquid dishwashing soap.
Lipstick
Scrape off any excess lipstick with a knife, saturate stain with hairspray, and dab carefully to remove.
Red Wine
Soak red wine stains in white wine, cover with baking soda, let sit for a couple of hours and rinse well.
